Carbonate Testing for Mining & Environmental Studies

Carbonate measurements help investigate how geological materials may buffer acidity generated by sulphide oxidation.

Why knowing the carbonate percentage matters

Characterise potential buffering

Carbonate content contributes evidence about acid-neutralising minerals in overburden and mine waste.

Inform acid-base accounting

Interpret carbonate concentrations alongside sulphur measurements and established neutralisation-potential tests to evaluate acid-generation risk.

Prioritise follow-up testing

Use compositional screening to identify contrasting materials for further mineralogical, leachate or kinetic testing.

How to interpret your result

Total carbonate is not the same as measured neutralisation potential. Mineral reactivity, sulphide content and field exposure influence drainage outcomes.

Agree the sample preparation, reporting units and moisture basis before testing. Ask whether your result will be reported as carbonate expressed as CaCO₃ equivalent, carbonate-derived CO₂ or another agreed quantity.
