Carbonate Analysis for Oil Drilling & Mud Logging
Carbonate measurements add compositional evidence to geological interpretation and help frame acid–rock compatibility studies.
Why knowing the carbonate percentage matters
Characterise drill cuttings and cores
Compare carbonate-rich and less carbonate-rich samples across an interval. Total carbonate and calcite–dolomite assessment provide complementary compositional information.
Inform acidising studies
Calcite and dolomite react with acid. Carbonate abundance and mineral identity help engineers plan laboratory screening of acid consumption and reaction behaviour.
Investigate compatibility
Carbonates can influence acid-treatment chemistry in mixed formations. Combine carbonate results with mineralogy, permeability and controlled compatibility tests before selecting a treatment.
How to interpret your result
A carbonate result cannot by itself predict reservoir quality, acid dosage or production uplift. Treatment design requires reservoir-specific testing.
Agree the sample preparation, reporting units and moisture basis before testing. Ask whether your result will be reported as carbonate expressed as CaCO₃ equivalent, carbonate-derived CO₂ or another agreed quantity.
